Driver's Education
In Maryland, the law requires all first-time drivers to complete an MVA-certified Driver’s Education course in order to obtain a driver’s license. This rule applies to all Maryland residents, regardless of age.
The course consists of two parts: a classroom portion, and an in-car driving portion. Students may take the classroom portion without a learner’s permit, and then return for the on-the-road training after they have obtained their permit.
The classroom portion of the course runs for 2 weeks from Monday through Friday (a total of 10 class days). Classes are in-person or virtual. Each class day is 3 hours long plus a 15-minute break.
There are also 3 in-car driving lessons of 2 hours each (a total of 6 in-car hours). Students may choose dates C times for the in-car lessons at any time after the last day of class. If you do not have a learner’s permit when you start the class, you can schedule the driving lessons after you obtain your permit.
